One Month Mark

This week was very hard because we had to travel to Managua twice and Wednesday to Chinandega because there was a transmission about changes in the schedules and other things. I like the changes because it gives us more time to spend with the people here.

My house is large; it has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms and a huge kitchen. There are scorpions, rats, mosquitos, flying cockroaches and of course ants. My legs are covered in mosquito bites even though I bathe in repellent. Oh well, it’s because I’m new; it’s like a welcoming thing.

The elders here are seriously the nicest and are always helping or asking if they can help.

Saturday we had 3 baptisms woooooo! The whole week was hard, but Saturday was an excellent day because we could work a lot. The baptism went well, it was of three young people: Kevin, America and Freddy.

The food is starting to affect me, but still going. The members feed us so much; they are so good to us. The heat, oh my gosh it is so hot!

My companion is great; soon I’ll be speaking Portuguese. She stresses really quickly and freaks out, and I’m just chill and calm with everything and that stresses her out more hahahaha. Oh well.

There are bon-o-bons here and they are good.

There is a young man here named Cesar who reminds me of Chris a lot hahaha. People here are really nice and they always worry about us and helping us. The other day we arrived home (I think it was Wednesday) and Pacheco found a scorpion in her bathroom. We called some members, but we thought they couldn’t hear us so we called our district leader who said for us to kill it using the bug repellent and fire hahahahaha. But then a sister member came over with a baseball bat and killed it. I was laughing so hard!

I love to be here and miss you very much, but not planning on going home for a long time, sorry. I love to be here even though there are hard days. I really can’t believe that I am here.

Oh! Also the Saturday we had the baptisms was also my one month mark!

Esta semana fue difícil porque tuvimos que viajar a Managua dos veces y a Chinandega el miércoles porque había una transmisión acerca de los cambios a horarios y otras cosas. Están ‘tuaniz’ (le tuve que preguntar qué quiere decir y dijo que es ‘cool’, bueno, lindo, etc) los cambios porque nos permite más tiempo para estar con la gente aquí.

Mi casa es grande: tiene tres habitaciones, dos baños, dos salas y una cocina grande. Hay alacranes, ratas, mosquitos, cucarachas voladoras y por supuesto hormigas. Mis piernas están llenas de picaduras de mosquitos aunque me baño en repelente. Y bueno, es porque soy nueva y es como una bienvenida.

Los élderes aquí realmente son los más buenos y siempre nos ayudan o preguntan si pueden ayudar.

¡El sábado tuvimos 3 bautismos! Toda la semana fue difícil, pero el sábado fue un día excelente porque pudimos trabajar mucho. Se bautizaron tres jóvenes: Kevin, América y Freddy.

La comida me está empezando a afectar, pero bueno, ahí voy. Los miembros nos dan de comer muchísimo, son muy buenos con nosotras. ¡El calor! ¡Hace mucho calor!

Mi compa es muy buena, pronto voy a hablar portugués. Ella se estresa muy rápido, y yo estoy tranquila y calmada por todo jajajaja y eso le estresa más jajaja. Y bueno.

Acá hay bon-o-bons y son ricos.

Hay un joven de una familia que se llama César y me recuerda mucho a Chris jajaja. La gente aquí es rebuena y siempre preocupadas por nosotras, siempre ayudándonos. El otro día llegamos a casa (creo que fue el miércoles) y Pacheco encontró un alacrán en su baño. Llamamos a unos miembros, pero pensamos que no nos escucharon entonces llamamos a nuestro líder de distrito que nos dijo que lo matemos con fuego con el repelente, pero después vino una hermana con un bate de béisbol y lo mató. Yo muriéndome de la risa jajajajaja.

Bueno amo tanto estar aquí y los extraño pero no voy a regresar a casa por mucho tiempo, lo siento. Me encanta estar aquí aunque hay días difíciles. Enserio no puedo creer que estoy aquí.

¡Oh el sábado que tuvimos los bautismos también fue un mes de que salí de casa!

Can we just take a second! Can you believe I’ve been in Nicaragua a whole week?!

The last week in the MTC was crazy fast. Elder Neil L. Andersen came to talk to us, that was good. And then the morning of my flight of course I woke up late. But it’s okay because they drove me instead of having to take the train so it wall worked out. 

But Nicaragua! First of all I have never in my life had so much rice or beans. If you think Peruvians eat a lot of rice-WRONG. Nothing compares to here.

Also, my poor companion is so done hearing the whole my mom is from Argentina and my dad is from Mexico thing, but whatever.

My comp or Mission Mama is Hermana Pacheco. She is from Brazil! She’s really great and is teaching me many things. I’m in the Chinandega Oeste area in the Tezeoatega ward. The people here are the nicest people and there is so much work to do. Pacheco and I are working hard every day and have so many great investigators and people in the ward. We have at least two baptisms for Saturday that we have been working hard on. And Saturday will be one month out!

We had a zone meeting and this Hermana from Oregon comes in and she says to me, ‘Welcome! You are gonna love it! You are going to learn Spanish super-fast!’ and I was like ‘I hope so!’ hahahaha.

My Spanish IS getting better, even my thoughts are in Spanish now hahahaha.

We met some amazing people this week. Everyone sees us and knows who we are; everyone says hi and is just so kind.

This morning we went to the beach, by some miracle we got permission from the president and he let us go.

Lots of mosquitoes biting me, no problem it’s fine BUT there are rats in the house. I haven’t seen them, but I hear them all the time, it’s crazy.

Definitely have enough to eat. Members feed us a lot every day. Super grateful. Our zone leaders and district leaders are the best, always checking up on us and helping us. We have the iPhone 8 hahahaha.

The weather! SOOO HOT but apparently it’s winter right now and during like April is when it gets super-hot! 

I love it here so much; it’s like an unreal dream. I can’t explain how amazing it is here. I keep thinking this is a joke on how much I love it.

Everywhere I go I see papi, I just see him walking the streets and talking to everyone and I hope to be half the missionary he was.

I had lots to say but can’t remember it all. I really appreciate everyone that’s writing me, you all have no idea. I’m sorry I can’t respond to everyone.

Tomemos un momento, ¡¿Pueden creer que ya tengo una semana en Nicaragua?!

La última semana en el CCM pasó súper rápido. El Elder Neil L. Andersen fue a hablarnos, eso estuvo bien. Y luego la mañana de mi vuelo por supuesto me levanté tarde. Pero está bien porque en vez de tomar el tren al aeropuerto me llevaron, asique salió todo bien. 

¡Pero Nicaragua! Primero que nada nunca en mi vida había comido tanto arroz o frijoles. Si piensan que los peruanos comen mucho arroz-ESTAN EQUIVOCADOS. Nada se compara a acá.

También, mi pobre compañera ya está cansada de escuchar la historia de que mi mamá es de Argentina y mi papá de México, pero bueno.

Mi compa o mamá de la misión es Hermana Pacheco. ¡Ella es de Brasil! Ella es muy buena y me está enseñando muchas cosas. Estoy en el área Chinandega Oeste en el barrio Tezeoatega. Acá las personas son muy buenas y tenemos mucho trabajo. Pacheco y yo trabajamos fuerte todos los días y tenemos muchos excelentes investigadores y gente en el barrio. Tenemos por lo menos dos bautismos este sábado con los que hemos estado trabajando fuerte. ¡Y el sábado va a ser un mes que estoy en la misión!

Tuvimos una reunión de zona y una hermana de Oregon se acercó a saludarme y me dijo ‘¡bienvenida, te va a encantar aquí! ¡Vas a aprender español muy rápido!’ y yo le dije ‘¡espero que sí!’ jajajaja.

Mi español SI está mejorando mucho, hasta pienso en español ahora jajaja.

Esta semana hemos conocido unas personas increíbles. Todos que nos ven saben quienes somos, nos saludan y son muy buenos.

Esta mañana fuimos a la playa. Por un milagro el presidente nos dio permiso de ir.

Me están picando mucho los mosquitos, no hay problema está bien. PERO hay ratas en la casa. No las he visto, pero las escucho todo el tiempo. Es loco.

Definitivamente tenemos suficiente para comer. Los miembros nos dan de comer mucho todos los días. Súper agradecida. Uestros líderes de zona y distrito son lo mejor, siempre se preocupan por nosotros y nos ayudan. Tenemos un iphone 8 jajajaja.

¡El clima! Tanto calor, pero aparentemente ahora es invierno y como en abril es cuando hace mucho calor. Me gusta tanto aquí, es como un sueño increíble No puedo explicar lo increíble que es aquí. Sigo pensando que es una broma de cuánto me gusta aquí.

En todas partes que voy veo a papi, lo veo caminando por las calles y hablando con todos. Espero ser la mitad de buena misionera de lo que fue él.

Tenía mucho que decir, pero no me acuerdo todo. Realmente aprecio muchísimo a todos los que me escriben, no tienen idea de cuánto. Lo siento que no pueda contestar a todos.

Arrival in Nicaragua

Finally heard from our missionary! (Still no photos, but hoping for some with Monday’s email)

I only have a few minutes to write. I arrived in Nicaragua Monday night. I am in Chinandega West area, my companion is Hermana Pacheco from Brazil. She is nice and I probably will learn some Portuguese because we have an hour of language study each day. We traveled on a bus thing at night to get here and I was sleeping the whole way. It’s about three hours from Managua.

The elders that picked me up thought I was from Honduras because of my last name (I was the only one coming from the US) and they thought I came with all the ones that came from Guatemala MTC, they all assumed hahaha. I brought too many bags! Honestly, thank goodness the elders came to help me with my ‘maletas’ (bags) or I would have died.

I miss my friends from the MTC a lot. Here is just my companion and I; there, always around all the elders and hermanas. I am sad Elder Johnson couldn’t come now too. This is so much harder, but it’s so cool. We just went and walked around and talked to so many people. Ivan’s email that I just read helped me a lot.

It is really hot, but I like it so far. There is lots of cat-calling honestly, but it’s ok. There are a lot of different words they use here. Like ‘pinche’ that is normal here, (a swear word in Mexico) I almost died when my companion said it hahahahaha. I feel like my clothes could be too fancy, but they are normal.

Don’t worry about sending packages. It is really expensive and I don’t know how long they take.

For food I had nice chicken earlier for lunch. Last night I had a salty cheese I didn’t like that mom probably would like. 

Everywhere I go I think of dad. It’s so similar to Mexico. The members remind me of dad a lot.

Wish I had more time to write, but I have to go. I will talk (write) to you on Monday. I’m just missing people right now.

¡Finalmente sabemos de nuestra misionera! (Todavía no tenemos fotos, pero espero que el lunes cuando escriba)

Solamente tengo unos minutos para escribir. Llegué a Nicaragua el lunes por la noche. Ahora estoy en el área Chinandega Oeste, mi compañera es hermana Pacheco de Brasil. Es muy buena y probablemente voy a aprender portugués porque cada día tenemos una hora para estudiar el idioma. Viajamos en un tipo autobús acá en la noche y dormí todo el camino. Estamos a tres horas de Managua.

Los élderes que me fueron a buscar pensaron que yo era de Honduras por mi apellido (yo era la única que llegó de USA) y que había llegado con el grupo del CCM Guatemala, todos asumieron jajajaja. ¡Traje muchas valijas! Honestamente, menos mal por los élderes que me ayudaron con mis maletas o me hubiese muerto.

Extraño mucho a mis amigos del CCM. Acá somos mi compa y yo; allá, siempre estaba con los élderes y hermanas. Me da mucha lástima que el Elder Johnson no pudo venir ahora también. Esto es más difícil de lo pensado, pero muy bueno. Hoy fuimos a caminar por ahí y hablamos con muchas personas. Recién leí el email de Iván y me ayudó mucho.

Acá hace mucho calor, pero por ahora me gusta. Honestamente, muchos gritan piropos, pero está bien. Acá usan muchas palabras diferentes. Por ejemplo, ‘pinche’ es normal acá (una mala palabra mexicana) y casi me muero cuando la dijo mi compañera jajajaja. Me siento como que mi ropa va a ser muy lujosa acá, pero es normal.

No te preocupes por mandar paquetes. Es muy caro y no sé cuánto tiempo tarden.

Hoy comí un pollo rico para el almuerzo. Anoche comí un queso salado que no me gustó, pero seguro le gusta a mami. 

A todos los lugares que voy pienso en papi. Acá es tan parecido a México. Los miembros también me recuerdan mucho a papi.

Me gustaría tener más tiempo para escribir, pero me tengo que ir. Hablamos el lunes. Ahora sólo estoy extrañando mucho.

Second and Last Week at MTC

This week went by so fast! Yeah, I leave on Monday and just got my itinerary. Elder Johnson (the other one in my district going to same mission), takes a later flight to Atlanta, but we will flight together to Managua.

To answer Diego's question if everyone in my district speaks Spanish or some learning: My zone is advanced Spanish so we all came to MTC on same day. All of us know Spanish basically, I mean obviously some more than others, but we don’t have class time for Spanish just doctrine and teaching. All of us leave on the 16 or 17. Both districts have gotten so close I’m going cry when we leave.

I don’t know if I told you, but I am staying in the same residence Fer stayed when he came! How cool huh. I really am enjoying it here and hope the field is better because this place sets really high expectations.

Thank you for everything you do. Thank you for writing me daily, I think my homesickness will hit me real hard when I get on that plane. But I’m really excited.

I ran into brother Halladay here. That was weird because I heard someone say Sister Cortez? And I turned around and it was him hahaha. He was working here.

What else do I do? My day basically goes wake-up, breakfast, class, lunch, gym, class, dinner, class, home, sleep. Sounds crazy boring and repetitive, but we have a good time. Right now as a district we are working on staying focused better. Because we laugh all the time and sometimes it can be a distraction.

They gave us a new schedule for this week and it’s a little different. Less time in the classroom, gym at night, and more study time.

I can’t believe this is my last week at the MTC! Crazy.

I can’t believe I’m on a mission and that it’s this much fun, I know Nicaragua isn’t going to be as luxurious as this, but hope I’m still laughing like I am here and still having a fun time.

Our teacher Brother Calder is so amazing. He is such a great teacher and changed my life.

I read Mosiah these past couple of days and I’ve never understood it so clearly. As I read it, it’s like a movie played in my head. It was awesome and it applies to what we study or what we have studied.

I don’t take many pictures, but my friends do and they will send them to me.

Semana 2 en el CCM

¡Esta semana pasó muy rápido! Sí, me voy el lunes y recién me dieron mi itinerario. El Elder Johnson (el otro en mi distrito que va a la misma misión que yo), vuela más tarde a Atlanta, pero vamos juntos en vuelo a Managua.

Para contestarle la pregunta a Diego si todos en mi distrito hablan español o están aprendiendo: Mi zona es español avanzado asique todos  vinimos al CCM juntos. Básicamente todos hablamos español, obvio algunos más que otros, pero no tenemos clases de español, solamente doctrina y enseñanza. Todos los vamos el 16 o el 17. Los dos distritos somos tan unidos que voy a llorar cuando nos vayamos.

No sé si te dije, ¡pero me estoy quedando en mismo edificio que Fer se quedó cuando estuvo acá! Realmente estoy disfrutando mi tiempo acá y espero que el campo sea mejor porque este lugar ha sido mejor de lo esperado.

Gracias por todo lo que haces. Gracias por escribirme a diario, creo que voy a extrañar cuando me suba al avión. Pero estoy muy entusiasmada.

Me enconté con el hno Halladay. Fue raro porque escuché a alguien decir ‘¿Hna Cortez?’ y me di vuelta y era él. Estaba trabajando aquí.

¿Qué más hago? Básicamente mis días van así: levantarme, desayuno, clase, almuerzo, gimnasio, clase, cena, clase, a casa, dormir. Suena súper aburrido y repetitivo, pero la pasamos bien. Ahora como distrito estamos tratando de enfocarnos mejor porque nos reímos muchas veces y eso puede ser una distracción.

Nos dieron un nuevo horario para esta semana y es un poco diferente. Menos tiempo en clase, gimnasio en la noche y más tiempo estudiando.

¡No puedo creer que esta sea mi última semana en el CCM! Loco.

No puedo creer que esté en una misión, es tan divertido. Sé que Nicaragua no va a ser tan lujoso como esto, pero espero seguir riendo y divirtiendo como acá.

Nuestro maestro Hermano Calder es increíble. Es un excelente maestro y ha cambiado mi vida.

Estos últimos días estuve leyendo Mosíah y nunca lo había entendido tan claramente. Al leerlo, era como una película en mi mente. Fue increíble y se aplica a lo que estamos estudiando o estudiamos.

No saco muchas fotos, pero mis amigos sí y me las van a mandar.

First Week at MTC

I don't even know what to say or how to start this!!!! 

PDAAAYYY AYYY I LOVE THE MTC! I've had such a good week honestly. The MTC is so much more than i could have ever expected. The Spirit is on another level that I have never experienced before. I've experienced so many revelations. 

My companion is Hermana Yep. She's Mexican and gets her last name from her grandpa or something that's Chinese. We get along great and she's seriously the perfect first companion. She loves so many things I do and we study really well together. 

My district, is just basically the best. Idc they're the best. I wanna tell you about all of them but I don't know how far I'd get. So our district leader is Elder Johnson he's going to NICARAGUA MANAGUA NORTH YAY. He's seriously such a great district leader and is always so kind. His companion is Elder Hawkin and he's from Chihuahua going to California somewhere. Then it's elder Rodriguez he's from Atlanta Georgia and is going to California too. And then his companion is Elder Lopez he's from Cali going to Arizona. THEN our roommates are Hermana Hernandez she's from Texas and going to the same mission as elder Rodriguez to California. Then her companion is hermana Rino and she's from Orem going to Arizona, Tempe. These hermanas and elders are seriously so great. The elders are so funny always making us laugh and the spirit they bring every single day is unreal. Its crazy how fast you learn to love here like I love them so much and they all come from very different stories and backgrounds but we're all here with the same purpose and desire and it's so great to see. 

Ok, a ver qué más. The food here is alright, there's so much of it though I'll probably gain about 4568 lbs but my skirts still fit so I'm good for now. 

For New Years like at midnight we did this really awesome thing called sleeping. It was great haha. Well it was a long long day and the rest was so needed. So here at the MTC i have an ipad so I can see whenever you send me emails and read them I just won't be able to respond until Monday! 

I love it here so much and there are some tough moments, but it's okay. I know it with all my heart this is exactly where I'm suppose to be. With these companions, this district this branch president and this MTC. This is where I desire to be and I wouldn't wanna  be anywhere else honestly. 

Yesterday was my first Sunday here and it was fast and testimony meeting. WOW. One of the best experiences I've had in my life. I can't believe how much I have learned. I feel so strong even towards the end of my fast I was feeling so good and strong. I have learned so much about Christ, the Atonement and this gospel in general. The Spirit is the greatest blessing we probably were given and I've learned how to be able to recognize it better and I love it. 

I know its only the first week but I've seen some miracles this week and it's been so good. Here it's always go go go and every moment of the day is scheduled, but it's okay, keeps us busy and focused. Like since today is pday and there's nothing really scheduled I feel so weird. 

Okay I'm probably forgetting a million things but that's all I can remember. I love you so much and am so excited for this week.
